Scotch Whisky Tasting a Dram Good Success

A regular visitor from Scotland hosted a Scotch Whisky Tasting on Sunday 25 August at Enterprise Beach Road, Oistins.

Calum Glenny, who has visited Barbados close to twenty times and has written several Barbados Travel Reviews, presided over the tasting of four Scottish whiskies. Calum started with two blended Scotch whiskies, Johnnie Walker Black Label, and then moved to Shackleton, which is virtually unknown on the island. Calum then opened Auchentoshan,  the first of two Single Malt Whiskies. Auchentoshan from just outside Glasgow with its sweet aromas of vanilla and hint of coconut went down very well with the 25 locals in attendance.

Finishing the tasting off with the Glen Moray classic single malt with its malty toffee sweetness and lemongrass citrus edge. Throughout, Calum provided an insight into the Scottish whisky industry along with humorous toasts and highlighted links between Scotland and Barbados through the likes of Kilchoman whisky from Islay purchasing Bentley Mansion on Barbados to develop a futuristic rum distillery. One of his favourite whisky distilleries Bruichladdich, also from the island of Islay, is part of the Remy Cointreau group – the very owners of Mount Gay rum. Finally, he told of the Jura Island Expression whisky, which was aged in ex-rum casks from Barbados.

Calum said, ‘being a proud Scotsman, I was delighted to take up the challenge from Charmaine St John and host a whisky tasting for friends and family. I found it really insightful that those sampling the Scotch very quickly identified the palate and finish especially of the two single malts. I hope I have encouraged those who took part to try other Scottish malt whiskies, and now they know how to taste whisky properly.’

Calum added ‘I’d like to sincerely thank those in attendance for their warm hospitality and friendship.’
