The question now is: who will program intelligence  – what will they program, and how?
AI machines can program. But that is only the beginning.
This is where we are – Humans used to program machines.
Now machines program themselves.
Soon machines will be creating intelligence.

The path taken: Humans programmed machines → machines learned → machines program themselves → machines creating intelligence.

Intelligent systems are now creating new systems. And soon they will do it all themselves
.

It’s a long way from my early days of studying computer science at Sir George Williams University in Montreal. That was about sixty years ago. We worked with languages such as FORTRAN, COBOL and later Pascal. Programs weren’t stored conveniently on a laptop or floating somewhere in the cloud. Instead we used stacks of cards encoded with punched holes in a sort of Morse code. Very prehistoric by today’s standards. AI machines can now generate code – you just need to describe what you want, and it is done.

What happens when machines can modify, replicate or program themselves without human intervention?

That is a subject for another episode, coming soon.

Black Swans & RoguesCulture explore the beauty of disruption — showing how chaos can lead to clarity and how reflection can replace reaction. In a world where travel, technology, and culture intersect in unpredictable ways, it’s easy to mistake uncertainty for decline. But sometimes, it’s precisely within disorder that we rediscover who we are.

Across the world, we see this pattern: cities reshaping after crises, destinations redefining their identity, and people rethinking what it means to live well. The unpredictable — the “Black Swan” moments — often reveal more profound truths. They challenge us to slow down, to see the connections hidden beneath the noise, and to appreciate the resilience of human creativity.

When outrage fades, understanding begins. The same holds true in travel and in life. Every disruption — whether a cultural shift, an environmental wake-up call, or a personal turning point — invites us to reflect. It pushes us to move beyond reaction and toward awareness.

This is what RoguesCulture calls “Reflective Rebellion”: the courage to stay human, to stay curious, and to keep seeking wisdom even when the world feels unsteady.

Travel, after all, is not just about movement. It’s about transformation. Each journey — like each Black Swan — has the power to shift our perspective and open us to the unexpected beauty of change.

Ian R Clayton, is the man in ” RoguesCulture Barefoot Wisdom”. He is the author of Rogues in Paradise and the founder of the RoguesCulture Podcast series.  “
I’m not your usual historian. I write from the street, the beach, and the heart—wearing flip-flops, chasing rogue voices, and peeling back the postcard.”

Rogues in Paradise is a cultural memoir told from the inside out—bold, barefoot, and deeply rooted in the real Barbados.

👉

Why Flip-Flops?

Because this isn’t academic. It’s cultural. It’s lived.
Flip-flops let me walk with the people I write about—rogues, mystics, vendors, legends.
They’re comfortable, irreverent, and grounded. Just like the stories I’m telling.
The real Barbados isn’t found in the history books. It’s found in sharp wit, quiet dignity, and everyday rebellion.
As a cultural provocateur in flip-flops, I write from that place—barefoot in spirit, unfiltered in voice.

🌀 The Role of the Rogue

This book isn’t about scoundrels. It’s not about Pirate Rogues. Not even about
what is a the meaning of Rogue.

It’s about survivors, truth-tellers, and joyful rule-breakers.
It’s about voices empire tried to erase—and how they echo across generations.

As Ian says: “I’m not here to tidy them up. I’m here to amplify their laughter, their resistance, their humanity.”
