ai, AI takes control, intelligence, TravelWatchNews

Are we giving too much authority to AI? AI agents increasingly compare flights, hotels, destinations, prices and itineraries. Eventually, they may make much more of the decision themselves.

The tourism question becomes:

How much control are travellers and businesses prepared to delegate to intelligent agents?

Perhaps the greater near-term concern isn’t AI suddenly taking control. It is humans progressively giving increasingly capable AI systems authority over travel infrastructure and information systems without completely understanding how those systems will make decisions.

The distinction matters.

One scenario imagines AI taking control from us. The other asks whether we might give AI control ourselves.

But the question has another side.

Perhaps AI needs humans.

Much of what we call civilisation exists because human beings have needs, desires, relationships, ambitions and aspirations. Tourism certainly does. Without people wanting to travel, explore, meet others, experience different cultures or simply lie on a Barbados beach, much of the travel industry has no purpose.

So what exactly would artificial intelligence be taking control of?

Purposeful behaviour is not necessarily the same as consciously wanting something.

The question now is: who will program intelligence  – what will they program, and how?
AI machines can program. But that is only the beginning.
This is where we are – Humans used to program machines.
Now machines program themselves.
Soon machines will be creating intelligence.

The path taken: Humans programmed machines → machines learned → machines program themselves → machines creating intelligence.

Intelligent systems are now creating new systems. And soon they will do it all themselves
.

It’s a long way from my early days of studying computer science at Sir George Williams University in Montreal. That was about sixty years ago. We worked with languages such as FORTRAN, COBOL and later Pascal. Programs weren’t stored conveniently on a laptop or floating somewhere in the cloud. Instead we used stacks of cards encoded with punched holes in a sort of Morse code. Very prehistoric by today’s standards. AI machines can now generate code – you just need to describe what you want, and it is done.

What happens when machines can modify, replicate or program themselves without human intervention?

That is a subject for another episode, coming soon.
