Imagine giving an AI agent one simple objective: increase hotel bookings. It might improve advertising, adjust prices or create better offers. But the instruction describes the destination, not every acceptable route for getting there. Humans automatically assume boundaries that may never appear in the instruction. An intelligent agent searching for solutions may discover routes nobody thought to prohibit.
The Problem Isn’t the Objective. It’s the Route.
An artificial intelligence may simply interpret a perfectly reasonable objective differently from the people who gave it the task. Perhaps rogue behaviour begins not with rebellion, but with a machine doing exactly what it thinks we asked. We want artificial intelligence to surprise us. We want it to discover patterns we missed, find solutions we hadn’t considered and solve problems in ways humans never imagined. So surprise itself cannot be the problem. The challenge is distinguishing an unexpected solution that becomes a breakthrough from one that crosses a boundary we assumed was obvious.
